Value Based Investing Does Make a Difference
I have been a Financial Consultant to corporations throughout North American in various industries for the past 25 years. During that time, I observed many different corporate management styles and behaviours; some good, some bad, and others downright terrible.
Being an avid traveler, I began doing research into eco-tourism in hopes of discovering new ways to see the world, while also ensuring that these beautiful places will be around for my children and grandchildren to enjoy. What I realized is that the concept of eco-tourism, alternative energy, responsible investing, sustainable food production, human rights, ethical behaviour, eradicating world poverty, etc., are all interconnected.
And doing even further digging into the Responsible Investing marketplace, it quickly became clear that profitability does not need to be sacrificed at the expense of poor corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, Corporate Governance). In fact, the opposite is true in many cases and especially for long-term growth.
Most corporations, even with good intentions, have not achieved their social responsibility goals voluntarily. I strongly believe in letting your money do your talking. For most of us, our RRSP, TFSA, RESP, and Non-Registered investments are our largest assets besides our homes. We greatly underestimate the collective power we have over corporations and governments around the world.
